What the numbers describe

Three kinds of numbers circulate: the pump alone, a basic installation, and a full job that starts with a hole in the slab. A quote of $900 and a quote of $6,000 can both be honest if they describe different jobs.

HomeStars prints a range of $100 to $1,200 for the unit. Pedestal pumps sit at $100 to $300, submersible pumps at $300 to $600, and combination systems with a built-in backup at $500 to $1,200. The rest of the bill is labour, concrete and wiring.

Ottawa job reports against Canada-wide guides

The HomeStars Ottawa guide prints $3,000 to $20,000 for sump pump installation, with an average of $8,050. The spread is wide because scope differs from job to job.

The national guide from the same publisher puts a basic installation at $700 to $2,000 and a complex one at $2,500 to $5,500. Its general plumbing guide gives $850 to $2,350 for installation and $400 to $920 for a repair.

Where the money goes

The HomeStars installation table breaks the job into lines:

Line Range
Pit creation $500–$1,000
Pipe and fittings $200–$600
Electrical connections $150–$800
Labour per hour $60–$110
Battery backup $200–$600
Alarm $50–$150
Permits and inspections $50–$500

A swap into an existing pit skips the first line. A first-time pit adds it. Hydro Ottawa recommends a ground fault circuit interrupter outlet for sump pumps, which can add wiring.

Pump type and backup power

Hydro Ottawa describes submersible pumps (quieter, in the pit), pedestal pumps (motor above the pit, simpler to service), backup pumps on battery, water pressure or a generator, and combination systems.

Ask the company to name the type and say why it fits your pit depth and your basement use.

Rebate and permit

A building permit is required before the work if you plan to claim the City of Ottawa rebate. The program pays the lesser of the cost or $1,500 for a sump pump with battery backup or generator connection in an existing pit, and $3,000 in a newly built pit, for primary and secondary pumps. It also rebates the plumbing permit fee. The City excludes maintenance, repair and replacement of existing devices. The step-by-step lives on the sump pump and backwater valve page, and the sister program for valves is covered in the backwater valve subsidy guide.

Reading a written quote

A usable quote names the pump make and model, the horsepower, the pit size and material, the discharge route, the check valve, the electrical work, the backup system, the permit, who removes the concrete and who repairs it, and the payment schedule. Compare two quotes line by line, and keep the signed one with the rebate papers.

Other prices are in the plumber cost guide and the drain cleaning cost guide.

Who you are dealing with

The tables above come from public price guides; the desk sets no price of its own. Your form reaches one independent Ottawa plumbing company, whose technician calls, looks at the pit and writes the number you will actually pay.

Questions to ask the company

  1. Is the price for a new pit or for a swap into the pit I have, and who breaks the slab and repairs it?
  2. Which pump type are you quoting, submersible or pedestal, and what horsepower?
  3. What does the quote include for the discharge line, the check valve and the wiring, and is a dedicated outlet part of it?
  4. Is the backup a battery system, a water-powered unit or a generator hookup, and how long does it run?
  5. Who pulls the building permit, and is the permit fee in the number or on top?

Have this ready for the call

  • Photos of the pit, the pump, the cord and the outlet it uses
  • The make and model printed on the pump, if you can read it
  • Where the discharge pipe leaves the house and where the water lands
  • Year the house was built and whether the basement is finished
  • Any past flooding with dates, and which season it happened in

Questions people ask

Why do Ottawa prices on HomeStars run so much higher than the Canada-wide ones?

The Ottawa figure of $3,000 to $20,000 covers Ottawa jobs of every scope. The Canada-wide $700 to $2,000 describes a basic job. Scope drives the gap, so ask each company what its number includes.

How long does a sump pump last before I pay for a replacement?

The HomeStars guide gives seven to ten years of life for most pumps, and lists grinding or rattling, constant running, rust and a rising power bill as signs of wear. A pump that serves a pit with heavy spring flow works harder, so the technician judges it on the visit.

Is a pedestal pump cheaper than a submersible one?

On HomeStars, pedestal units run $100 to $300 and submersible units $300 to $600. Hydro Ottawa adds that pedestals are noisier and weaker in deep pits.

Does a battery backup change the total much?

HomeStars prints $200 to $600 for the battery backup component and $500 to $1,200 for a combination system. Hydro Ottawa suggests backup able to run up to 72 hours.

Can the quote change after the work starts?

Only within a limit. Ontario’s renovation guide caps the overrun at 10% of a written estimate, and anything more needs a change you sign. Get the scope written in detail, so a surprise slab or wiring job becomes a change you approve.

Are alarms and permits extra?

HomeStars lists alarm systems at $50 to $150 and permits or inspections at $50 to $500 as optional extras in its installation table. Rebate work in Ottawa starts with a building permit, so ask whether the permit and the City inspection are inside the quote.
