What to ask before you book

  1. Q1Is your price for opening the clog only, or for cleaning the pipe wall too?
  2. Q2Which tool will you use on my drain: a hand cable, a machine, a jetter?
  3. Q3Is a camera inspection included, and do I get the video or photos?
  4. Q4If the camera shows the problem past my property line, will you put that in writing for the City?
  5. Q5What is the charge if the drain is still slow after you leave?

Before the visit

  • Which drains are slow, and which drain backs up when another one runs
  • Where the clean-out is: often a capped pipe in the basement floor at the front of the house, near the water meter
  • A clear metre around the clean-out and the floor drain
  • Towels and an empty bucket near the fixture
  • Tell the plumber about any drain cleaner you poured in, and when

Which drain, and what else reacts

A single slow sink is a short job: a hand cable or small machine on a 1.5 to 2-inch pipe. A kitchen sink that backs up into the basement laundry tub, or a floor drain that fills when the toilet flushes, points to the main line. That takes a heavier machine and possibly a camera.

In the work order, list every drain that is slow or gurgles, and what you were running when it backed up. That one line tells the company which machine to load.

Clog removal or a full cleaning

There are three methods, and each prices differently:

  • Cable or snake. Breaks through the blockage. Often the lowest-priced option, suited to hair and soap in a bathroom drain.
  • Hydro-jetting. High-pressure water scours grease and sludge off the pipe wall. It costs more and suits heavy buildup and repeat clogs.
  • Camera. Finds the cause and the spot: roots, a sag, a collapsed section. Some companies include it on main drains, some bill it.

Ask which one the price covers. Two quotes only compare when they describe the same work.

Roots, laterals and the property line

The pipe from your house to the sewer main is the lateral. In Ottawa, the homeowner is responsible from the house to the property line, and the City from the property line to the street. When a repair crosses the line, the cost can be shared.

Roots from a City-owned tree, or damage on the City’s part of the pipe, put the blockage on the City. If the plumber’s camera shows that, ask for the video and a written note with the distance from the clean-out, and call 3-1-1. If you already paid for the work, the City can reimburse you up to its usual contractor price through its Claims Unit. Relining or replacing the private part is billed by the contractor to you, and the City notes a building permit may be required.

Grease, wipes and repeat calls

The City of Ottawa lists grease, paper, kitchen waste and tree roots among the causes of blocked laterals. Grease hardens as it cools and coats the pipe. If the same drain blocks twice in a season, ask for a camera on the second visit and a cleaning of the pipe wall.

Questions

01The basement floor drain backs up when the washer drains. What is that?

When one fixture backs up through another, the blockage is usually further down the shared line, past where the two meet. A kitchen sink and a basement laundry often share a pipe in Ottawa houses, one Ottawa firm notes. Mention every drain that reacts so the plumber brings a machine sized for the main line.

02Who pays if tree roots block the sewer pipe?

The City of Ottawa says lateral blockages are generally the homeowner’s cost, unless the roots come from a City-owned tree or the damaged part is on City property. If a plumber finds the blockage on the City side, the City covers the repair and can reimburse you up to what it usually pays its own contractor.

03Does the City clear my drain?

The City inspects the sewer main when you report a backup to 3-1-1, and fixes the main if the problem is there. Blockages on your side are cleared by a contractor you choose, or the City’s contractor, and the homeowner pays for that part.

04Why does a camera inspection cost extra?

A camera shows where the blockage is and what caused it: grease, roots, a collapsed or misaligned pipe. Some companies include it for main drains; others bill it separately. A Canada-wide guide lists $400–$660.

05Can you clean the drain in a condo?

Yes. Tell us in the work order that it is a condo, which floor, and if neighbours have the same problem. If the blockage is in a pipe shared with other units, your property manager needs to know before the work starts.
