Ottawa prices at a glance

The table above comes from HomeStars homeowners in Ottawa, collected into one cost guide that was updated on 21.08.2026. It rests on 62 jobs: a record of what people reported paying, with no firm’s rates behind it. HomeStars notes that these figures exclude extra material or labour.

Read each row as a range. A blocked drain at $124 and another at $8,500 carry the same label, and a good quote explains where on the range yours lands.

How plumbers charge

HomeStars names the usual pieces. Hourly rates of $60 to $270 across Canada. A service call of $140 to $475 that usually includes the first hour. Trip fees of $70 to $400, with some firms charging a flat fee inside a radius and mileage beyond it, others setting a one- or two-hour minimum. Some firms bill the first hour at one rate and each hour after at a lower one.

Two billing styles run through the trade. Flat-rate pricing gives one total after the plumber sees the job. Hourly pricing follows the clock. The HomeStars Ottawa guide lists the same two methods, cost per hour or a flat rate per job, and suggests getting an estimate for both and fixing the method before the project begins. Ask which one you are getting.

What sits on top of the labour

The Mr. Rooter Ottawa article lists the add-ons to look for: a diagnostic fee, an after-hours call-out fee, permit fees passed on to the homeowner, specialized equipment such as sewer cameras and hydro-jetting machines, and a travel fee for customers in more remote parts of Ottawa. Material counts too. HomeStars Ottawa says extra pipes or faucets the plumber has to buy are charged as material overhead, and suggests discussing the material needs before hiring.

Hidden work moves the number most. A pipe behind a finished wall, a drain under a slab or an old shut-off that will not close all add hours. Finish work after the plumber leaves, such as drywall or paint, belongs to another trade, and HomeStars suggests adding those costs to your budget.

Reading a written quote

Any plumbing job over $50 needs a written agreement under Ontario’s Consumer Protection Act. The province’s renovation guide says what a good one carries: the work and materials, an itemized list of products and services, the warranties on goods and labour, the total with tax, payment terms, a schedule and the sub-trades. Sign it at home and a 10-day cooling-off period applies.

Compare quotes line by line. One quote that includes the camera and the permit fee and another that leaves them out are different offers. Drain cleaning and Leak repair cover the two most common calls.

Where the spreads are widest

Water heater installation runs $300 to $10,000 on the Ottawa list and $1,000 to $1,850 in the Canada-wide guide. Sump pump installation runs $3,000 to $20,000 in Ottawa and $850 to $2,350 nationally. HomeStars gives no reason for the gaps, so ask each company what its number includes. See Water heater and Sump pump.

Who you are dealing with

Keep this table open when the phone rings. The price you hear comes from one independent local plumbing company, the one Ottawa Plumbing Desk forwards your job to, and it should land somewhere these figures explain. A number far outside them deserves a line-by-line written quote.

Questions to ask the company

  1. Is your price hourly or a flat rate for this job, and which one do you recommend?
  2. Does the price include the service call, the trip fee and the first hour?
  3. What is listed separately: parts, a camera, permit fees, disposal?
  4. What happens to the price if you find something else once you start?
  5. What deposit do you ask for, and when is the balance due?

Have this ready for the call

  • The job in one sentence, with photos of the fixture, pipe or equipment
  • The age of the house and the plumbing material if you know it
  • Access notes: stairs, finished walls, a crawl space or a locked basement
  • Any quote you already hold, so the company can see what it covers

Questions people ask

What does a plumber charge per hour in Ontario?

HomeStars gives $60 to $270 an hour across Canada, with pros averaging $105 to $175 an hour. A master plumber usually costs $30 to $100 more per hour than a standard plumber. Rates on an invoice also carry insurance, vehicle and tool costs, so the hourly figure is higher than a plumber’s wage.

What is a service call fee?

It is the charge for the plumber to come, diagnose and start. HomeStars puts Canadian service calls at $140 to $475 and says the fee usually includes the first hour of labour. Some firms fold it into the job price and others list it on a separate line, so ask which.

Do plumbers charge more at night or on weekends?

A Mr. Rooter Ottawa article says daytime emergency jobs cost the same as booked service, and only after-hours calls add a call-out fee while the repair price stays the same. Other firms set their own rules, so ask for the after-hours charge before you agree.

Should I choose a flat rate or an hourly price?

HomeStars Ottawa says plumbers charge either per hour or per job at a flat rate, depending on the number of tasks and their complexity. It suggests getting an estimate for both, comparing them and fixing the method before the project begins.

The plumber found more once the wall was open. Can the bill go up?

By 10% over the written estimate, yes. Past that, Ontario’s consumer rules require that you asked for the added or different work and that both of you signed the change. Have the new scope and price written before the extra work starts.

How much deposit is normal?

The province’s guide for renovation businesses puts the suggested ceiling at a tenth of the total. Small repairs often need none. Ask when the balance falls due and what the deposit covers.
